BESTIVAL - 1st day

First day of Bestival was a lovely one. Nearly 5000 people, in my opinion, gathered to see Yonderboi, Hooverphonic, Morcheeba and Faithless live. I've missed Yonderboi's set but I've got there just in time to enjoy Hoover's performance. Great set with a lot of old songs and the singer was just hot and amazing.

Morcheeba had their first performance in nearly two years, as they said and it was a very nice one. One of the girls was booed when she had mistaken Bucharest for Budapest, but she made things up afterwards. Although the band's initial singer, Skye was pretty much perfect, Daisy and Amber are nice live but they miss a little charisma. And of course, Godfrey brothers on the turntables and guitar were absolutely brilliant.



The main act of the evening was Faithless. They had a fantastic show where they've played all their hits. I can't believe Maxi Jazz is 50 years old. He has tremendous energy and the way he interacts with public is just extraordinary. He and the band have made the huge crowd to jump for over an hour. They had to return for one more round when they've performed Muhammad Ali, We Come 1 and What About Love.



Can't wait for the Wu Tang Clan performance on Sunday.

The Ronettes - The Ronettes featuring Veronica (1961)

The Ronettes were a girl group of the 1960s from New York City, best known for their work with producer Phil Spector. They consisted of lead singer Veronica Bennett (a.k.a. Ronnie Spector), her sister Estelle Bennett, and their cousin Nedra Talley. Their most famous songs include "Be My Baby", "Baby I Love You", and "Walking in the Rain." After a hiatus in the middle of the 60s, the Ronettes (and Spector) re-emerged without much of a popular reaction; musical tastes had moved beyond the girl group sound, and the Ronettes were unable to maintain their relevance. They disbanded in 1966 after criss-crossing the United States and Canada that summer as one of the opening acts for the final concert tour of The Beatles. (as written on the wiki)

John Coltrane - Blue Train (1957)

Classic record from Trane. It is considered by many to be Coltrane's first "true" solo album, the first he recorded featuring musicians and songs entirely of his choosing. All of the compositions were written by Coltrane, save one ("I'm Old Fashioned", a Jerome Kern/Johnny Mercer standard). The title track is a long, rhythmically variegated blues with a brooding minor theme that gradually shifts to major during Coltrane's first chorus. "Locomotion" is also a blues riff tune. Elsewhere, whereas Coltrane's next major LP, Giant Steps, would break new melodic and harmonic ground in jazz, Blue Train adheres to the hard bop style of the era. That being said, two of its tunes, "Moment's Notice" and "Lazy Bird" do anticipate the "Coltrane changes" he would later develop. (as written on the wiki)

Cash Money & Marvelous - Where's The Party At (1988)

DJ Cash Money, a protégé of DJ Jazzy Jeff, was merely a local legend in his hometown Philadelphia who then lived up to his nickname “The World’s Greatest DJ,” by inexplicably winning the Disco Mixing Championship, American Mixing Championship and the New Music Seminar DJ Battle For World Supremacy in 1988. He then teamed up with microphone comedian Marvelous to cut Where The Party At?, which does not veer from its intended theme for even one nanosecond. Marvelous is an affable, uninhibited host whose lowbrow humor is undeniably magnetic: even his questionable claim that he is not in fact playing or joking during a song as absurd as “Marvelous’ Drawers” is endearing. He sounds remarkably like LL Cool J but is far less concerned with the poor performance of rival rappers, although he gives sucka ducks a serious wake-up call on “Time Is Up.”

More often, Marvelous is content to summon partygoers to the dance floor, big up his DJ’s superior skills, and act a fool. He disses women with horsehair weaves (“Is It Real?”) but sarcastically extols the virtues of a non-superficial outlook on the opposite sex on the hilarious “Find An Ugly Woman.” His sense of humor is never more than juvenile, often to a fault, but his delivery is rugged enough to sound at home over Cash Money’s expertly selected drum loops and supernatural scratching. The wonderfully unruly remix of “Ugly People Be Quiet” and the engrossing JB’s flip “A Real Mutha For Ya” summarize this album’s transitional spirit: both DJ and MC share the spotlight, and both place equal emphasis on technical ability and stage presence for the benefit of the crowd. Nearly every track is a potential crowd pleaser, making Party one of the least self-involved (and most fun) rap albums you have yet to discover. (from ohword.com)

We All Love Ella: Celebrating the First Lady of Song

Wonderful tribute for Ella Fitzgerald "the First Lady of Song". Covering songs made famous by Ella Fitzgerald is a daunting endeavor, since only Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan challenge her place as the premier female jazz vocalist in history. But the late Fitzgerald inspired and influenced a wide array of talented acolytes--from Natalie Cole to k.d. lang to Dianne Reeves--many of whom gather on this spirited, Phil Ramone-produced tribute to partially benefit the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation. Cole, backed by an eager gaggle of call-and-response male worshippers, breathes fun new life into the swingy "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," while Chaka Khan, showcasing the breadth of her range, delivers a transporting rendition of the enchanting jazz blues "Lullaby of Birdland." (The two also team up for a delicious scat-fest on "Mr. Paganini.") If lang is equally transfixing on the ballad "Angel Eyes," it's newcomer Ledisi who steals the show with "Blues in the Night," her expansive soprano often mimicking a muted or full-tilt trumpet, one of Fitzgerald's hallmarks. Performances from Etta James and Nikki Yanofsky also rivet, even if Diana Krall and Hank Jones's "Dream a Little Dream of Me" comes across as a little too sleepy, and Gladys Knight is probably not the best singer for "Someone to Watch Over Me." The album surprises with a live duet ("You Are the Sunshine of My Life") between Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder, recorded at the 1977 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Although it seems tacked on, it doesn't grate nearly as much as Michael Bublé's "Too Close for Comfort," so slick it would put an eel to shame. Skip over that transgression, and turn to the antidote of Lizz Wright's sultry take on the melancholy "Reaching for the Moon," which plumbs emotional depths not even the ever-joyous Great Lady managed to attain. --Alanna Nash, amazon.com
